Mines Geophysics invites Alums to Field Camp and Alumni Receptions to celebrate the department’s 100th Anniversary

News | December 9, 2024

Celebrating our Geophysics Alums is one of the best aspects of our upcoming 100th Anniversary! As we approach this milestone in 2026, we have added alum engagement opportunities, including a fantastic Field Camp experience! Each May, alums are invited to join us in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and spend the day in the field with our rising seniors, Geophysics Field Camp Director, Dr. Matt Siegfried, and Field Camp faculty. After a busy day in the field exploring hands-on state-of-the-art geophysical technology, the Department and the Alumni Foundation host a reception for our Alums, current students, and faculty.

We are excited to celebrate a major milestone in the life of our department: Mines Geophysics will turn 100 in 2026! Our program was established in 1926 as the world’s first Department of Geophysics and continues strong today as one of the top global applied geophysics programs. We have much to celebrate: the legacy of our successful past; the diversity of our current program; and the vision of our ambitious future. We have initiated a wide range of activities celebrating and engaging our entire Geophysics family highlighted in the Calendar of Events below. We hope that you will continue to join us! Save the Date for our 100th Anniversary Celebration on campus, September 18 & 19, 2026!

In addition to monthly events to celebrate 100 years of Geophysics at Mines, we have kicked off our  100@100Fundraising Campaign to support the Geophysics@100 Field Experience Endowed Fund. This fund will provide future geophysics students with resources to access state-of-the-art field equipment, engage in field activities at remote and challenging sites, and develop their leadership skills for innovative, safe, and practical geophysical fieldwork. Our goal is to ensure that the Mines Geophysics Field Experience is the world’s best geophysics field training program for the next 100 years.
