Part
of the CGEM mandate is to encourage and foster student interest
in potential field methods in applied geophysics and to
provide research opportunities for those who would like
to pursue a geophysics degree with an emphasis on gravity,
magnetic, electrical, and electromagnetic methods.
We
are a newly formed research center and have seen much growth
in the recent years. Similar to the Geophysics Department,
our group is characterized by close interaction among faculty
and students through activities such as weekly research
meetings, professional conference presentations, workshops
and luncheons.
Benefits
of working with our group include:
- A
broad range of research topics from theory to application
- Opportunities
to work with other research consortia on campus, adjunct
faculty, government organizations
- A
supportive teamwork environment
- Opportunies
to present and publish research at internal and professional
meetings
Resources
available to CGEM:
- Computers
- Software
(MatLab, GM-SYS, Oasis)
- Example
datasets from around the world
- Geophysical
equipment for gravity, magnetic, electrical & electromagnetic
surveys
Undergraduate
Opportunities:
There
are opportunities within CGEM for undergraduate students
in the Department of Geophysics at CSM to work on different
research projects under the supervision of a faculty member
during each academic year. If you are interested in gaining
research experience and would enjoy being a part of a research
group during your undergraduate career at CSM, please contact
us at cgem@mines.edu for available positions.
Graduate
Opportunities:
Graduate
students within CGEM specialize in potential fields methods
including gravity, gravity gradiometry, magnetics, electrical
and electromagnetics. Emphasis is placed on numerical techniques
for modeling, processing, and inverting large-scale data
arising from mineral, petroleum, UXO, archaeological, and
environmental problems. Other areas of research such as
mathematical modeling are also possible.
If you are interested in becoming a graduate student at
Colorado School of Mines and would like information on CGEM
or any of its research consortia, please contact us (cgem@mines.edu;
(303) 273-3510).
CGEM
students have been accepted straight from undergraduate
school to those with several years of industry experience.
During their studies, students may paticipate in field work,
data collection and internships to enhance their experience
and make professional contacts.
If
you enjoy gravity, magnetics, electrical or electromagnetics
and enjoy working within a small but dynamic group, please
feel free to contact or visit us. We would enjoy discussing
your interests and helping you make the most of your graduate
career in CSM Geophysics. We also encourage prospective
students to visit our department and meet with students
and faculty one-on-one. If you are interested in visiting
the CSM Geophysics department, please send an e-mail to
Sara Summers (ssummers@mines.edu) and she can assist
you in planning your visit.
